The cache site is between the hamlets of Hogley and Yew Tree.
Hogley is a small hamlet in Austonley in the graveship of Holme. It is shown on a map drawn by Joshua Marsden in 1757, reputedly from a survey of Henry V’s reign. The name Hogley is thought to mean ‘hog-clearing’. The ‘hog’ possibly being a wild hog or even a sheep as, locally, ‘hogs’ were year-old sheep.
The Austonley place name, Yew Tree, is on record from 1539. The yew is a very long-lived and handsome evergreen, highly prized in the past for its wood, which was used for the traditional long bow and for making furniture.
This cache is a camo tube and is NOT located in a wall.
