This Traditional Cache replaces the old multi-cache MST @ Fire Tower GC1HX9V, which never was a true multi-cache and caused some confusion with cachers.
The cache is at the end of Fire Tower Road. The last .93 miles of the road is seasonal and unplowed in the winter. If the gate is locked you will need to walk from the all-season parking lot located at the gate.If the gate is unlocked, you may drive the upper .93 miles to the Fire Tower, but it is quite rough. You can make it with a conventional passenger car (except in the wintertime), but be very careful not to bottom out.
Because this cache is located on State Game Lands you must know and abide by the rules and regulations of the Pennsylvania State Game Commission. Two sections of the Game Commission regulations that you need to be aware of are Paragraphs 135.2 (Unlawful actions) and 135.41 (State game lands). These regulations are posted at the parking lot. Except on Sundays, if you are present on State game lands from Nov. 15 through Dec. 15 inclusive you MUST wear a minimum of 250 square inches of fluorescent orange-colored material on the head, chest and back combined.
The "Fire Tower", as it's know by hikers, bikers, hunters, and other local ridge runners, is actually not a fire tower at all. It used to be in times past but now it's a Pennsylvania State communictions tower. There is a fence around this very tall structure and accompanying shed and equipment. No need to go behind the fence. That's off limits.
You'll be really up in the air here (elevation 2260 feet) and there is a good view of the Armenia Mountain area to the south and east. On a clear day you can see 21+ miles. Bring your camera.
The 325 mile Mid State Trail (MST) passes by the tower and within 30 feet of the cache. If you should have the inclination to hike to the cache instead of driving, trailheads are at Hills Creek State Park and Ives Run Recreation Area. It's 5.2 miles from the north end of Hills Creek Lake and 4.0 miles from the Ives Run Campground trailhead.
The cache contains normal swag but is slanted toward the hiking theme.
The coordinates place you about 100 yards west of the parking area. The Mid State Trail here is a seldom used service road. The cache, a .30 caliber ammo can, is located in a grove of large spruce trees about 30 feet northwest of the Trail. Look closely and you'll find the concrete pads that once supported the old fire tower.
