This cache is based on a variation of a marine navigational technique called the Running Fix. A running fix is a coastal navigation fix taken by bearings of a single object over a period of time. By using the ship’s known course and speed, its’ present location can be calculated.
Normally, with a running fix, the precise location of the “single object” is known. This object is generally a highly visible landmark such as a Lighthouse, promontory, or other item depicted and positioned precisely on the charts. This makes plotting a ship’s position relative to that object fairly straightforward. However, as always, I don’t like things to be too straightforward. I have therefore neglected to provide the coordinates of the object. In fact, there is no actual object, just an imaginary position which I will call WP???. Instead, I have provided you with the above coordinates, representing the starting point of my search for the perfect cache location.
Using my grandfather’s antique marine compass, (previously calibrated and adjusted for declination) I determined that WP??? is East by north of the start point of my quest. I then set out on a North northwest course and proceeded in a straight line at my usual bushwhacking speed of 2.5 knots. After 7 minutes and 10 seconds at this velocity, I determined that there were no promising porte caches on this route. I took another compass reading to WP??? and found it to be East southeast of my current position. Changing course to Northeast, I walked in a straight line until I found a good spot for the cache. After carefully placing the cache in a winter-friendly position, I took another compass reading and found that WP??? is Southeast by South of the porte cache.
Can you find the cache?
As befits a Nautical-themed cache, there is significant water in the vicinity during certain times of the year and wading will be required. Some bushwhacking is also necessary. As a result, the terrain rating of this cache will vary with the seasons. Consider yourself warned!!

En employant la direction et la vitesse du bateau, on peut calculer sa position actuelle.
Normalement, avec une "running fix", la position précise de l'objet est connue. Cet objet est généralement une chose fortement évidente telle qu'un phare, un promontoire, ou tout autre article représenté et placé avec précision sur les cartes. Ceci facilite beaucoup la détermination de la position d'un bateau par rapport à l’objet. Cependant, comme toujours, je n'aime pas que ce soit trop facile. J'ai donc négligé de fournir les coordonnées de l'objet. En fait, il n'y a aucun objet réel, juste une position imaginaire que j'appellerai WP??? . Au lieu de cela, j’ai fourni les coordonnées ci-dessus, représentant le point de départ de ma recherche pour l'endroit parfait de cache.
Utilisant la boussole de mon grand-père, (précédemment calibrée et ajustée à la déclinaison) j'ai déterminé que l'azimut au WP??? était Est-quart-nord-est au début de ma recherche. Je me suit en suite aligné sur un cours nord-nord-ouest et je me suis dirigé en ligne droite à ma vitesse habituelle de 2.5 noeuds. Après sept minutes et dix secondes à cette vitesse, j'ai finalement vu qu'il n'y avait aucune possibilité prometteuse de porte cache dans cette direction. J'ai pris une autre lecture par rapport au WP??? et j’ai trouvé que l'azimut était est-sud-est par rapport à ma position. Changeant ma direction vers le Nord-est, j'ai marché en ligne droite jusqu'à ce que je trouve l’endroit idéal pour la cache. Après avoir soigneusement placé la cache, j'ai constaté que l'azimut de cette position de cache au WP??? était Sud-est-quart-sud.
Pouvez-vous trouver la cache ?
Comme pour toute cache Nautique, il y a assez d’eau à proximité pendant certaines périodes de l'année et vous aurez à patauger. Un peu de débroussaillage sera également nécessaire. En conséquence, la difficulté de cette cache varie avec les saisons. On vous aura averti !!
