Geocache Description:

This cache is located near the highest point in Maryland. To get to it you need to take Route 219 south of the Rts 219 and 50 intersection at Red House MD. (South of Oakland.) Travel south into West Virginia (yes you must enter West Virginia for this Maryland Cache) and you will see a well marked trail on the left side of the road approximately 0.7 miles from Silver Lake -- 5.5 miles from Red House.

The trail is marked by a Red Paint mark on a stump next to Rt. 219 along with red marks on a road sign stating MD HP. Travel about 50 ft. past the markers to a pull off on the right side of the road. Please follow the trail to the highest point, do not use your gps pointer as it will take you through private posted property. You must also be prepared to hike this as the trail is blocked to vehicle traffic. The trail is well marked and kept (an old logging road for the most part). The goal of this cache is to get you to the highest point - not to trick you into finding it. Be prepared for a difficult climb - approximately a .9 mile hike with over 600 feet elevation change. If you find the cache first, please go on to the highest point and check out the view as well as sign the high point log book!! Plan to spend 1 to 2 hours to hike this as the elevation change does make this difficult. I would not recommend anyone that has difficulty walking attempting this or attempting this during snowy weather. The cache is a painted cammo ammo can and is hidden near an old stone marker before you get to the high point. Please hide the cache as you found it due to the high number of hikers in this area. Don't worry - the high point is not much further and if you made it this far you must continue the journey - the view is worth it. Just hope you choose the correct branch of the trail when you get to make the choice!! When placed the cache had a small flashlight, batteries, insect repellent (you might need this in warm weather), a first aid kit, and a whistle.
