A cache placed in the village of Colwich, site of a junction on the
West Coast Main Line. It is next to the railway line but, it is
accessible off the adjacent public lane, with parking available
nearby.
It is not necessary to go on or near the railway line to do this
cache, so please do not trespass on the railway lines. The cache
itself is a ‘magnetic’ film canister with logbook and
pencil.
The evening of Friday 19 September 1986 at Colwich Junction,
Staffordshire was significant in that it was the day a high speed
collision between two express passenger trains occurred. All
passengers survived, mainly because the coaches involved were
relatively modern and strong, but the driver of one train was
killed. This cache is placed in memory of Eric Goode who was the
driver of a Liverpool to London express. His train crashed in to a
London to Manchester train which had passed a red signal and was
blocking the junction. The loco that Driver Goode was in charge of,
86211 ‘City of Milton Keynes’, ploughed into the
stranded Manchester train and he was tragically killed.
A local track inspector and Colwich resident, Alf Taylor decided to
create a memorial to Eric Goode at the site of the accident. Alf
looked after this garden until his death in 1997. On 17 September
2006, just before the 20th anniversary of the accident, the garden
was re-dedicated after a period of neglect. A replica of the loco
nameplates, plaques dedicated to Driver Eric Goode and Alfie Taylor
are present at the cache site in order that we remember them. The
site is now looked after by a local group called 'The Haywoods
Permanent Way'.
As I am a local railwayman myself, I have placed this, my first
cache as a tribute to the gentlemen named above.
More can be read about this tragic accident on wikipedia by
searching for Colwich rail crash.
Added Note - You do not need to go into the garden to do the cache.
