Der Steinbruch Hoppenstedt.

Warum ist der Meeresboden des Kreidemeeres bei Hoppenstedt gekippt?

Das Harzvorland war in seiner geologischen Geschichte mehrfach vom Meer bedeckt.
Auch heute noch sind zahlreiche Spuren dieser ehemaligen, viele Millionen Jahre alten, Meeresbedeckung vorhanden.
Am Südabhang des kleinen Fallstein gibt es eine Reihe von kleinen Steinbrüchen mit Kalksteinen und Mergeln aus der Oberkreide (vor 98,9 Mio. bis 65 Mio. Jahren). Der stillgelegte, als Naturdenkmal geschützte Steinbruch Hoppenstedt ist der schönste und wichtigste geologische Aufschluß der Region.
Die 85m mächtigen marinen Schichten enthalten versteinerte Muscheln und andere Meeresbewohner. In Folge starker tektonischer Bewegfungen vor etwa 89 Mio. Jahren (Ilseder Phase) gerieten die tief im Untergrund lagernden Salzschichten des Zechsteins (vor 251 Mio. bis 257 Mio. Jahren)in Bewegung und bildete Salzkissen, Salzstöcke und Salzmauern. Das führte zu einer Steilstellung der darüberliegenden Ablagerungen des ehemaligen "Meeresbodens", dessen Schichten heute mit 30° bis 45° in Richtung S-SSW einfallen.

Why has the seabed of the chalk sea tipped with Hoppenstedt?

The resinous foothills were covered in his geologic history several times by the sea.
