This earthcache offers if one goes from Antalya on the D 330 to
Cappadocia and one likes to make a small break and to visit,
besides, an interesting geologic place without strain.
Konya is the capital of the Turkish province of Konya, which has
the biggest surface of all provinces of Turkey. The town lies in
the middle of a plateau on about 1200 m of sea level, almost in the
geographic centre of Anatolia. The plateau is almost treeless, has
no drain to the sea, but only local rivers which flow into inland
lakes.
75 km to the east of Konya a street turns near the village Kizören
to the north away from the D 300 towards the village named Obruk.
After about 3.5 kilometers one reaches a big 145 meters deep, oval
doline with a cross section dimension from 200 – 230 meters.
The doline is situated a few meters away from the street hidden
behind the big historical Seljukic caravansery Obruk Han from the
year 1320, so that one sees the doline first if one stands close
the brim.

The doline is filled with freshwater and has a subterranean
connection with the karstic spring Taspinar in the southwest of the
Tuz Gölü. It is a part of a subterranean karstic spring system to
which belong also about 20 dolines with a diameter belong up to 500
meters to the south of the high street near the village named
Çukurkuyn. Today one uses the water from the doline of Obruk for
irrigation and as drinking water. A cause for the formation of
dolines are the calcareous sea sediments of this area. In the
Pliocene – Miocene here was a big lake which was far extended
after the south and the north up to the salt lake and in which the
sea chalk was deposited. By lixiviation of the karst formations
dolines were formed.
One distinguishes dolines which originate from lixiviation of the
rock in the surface as a result of seeping water, and dolines by
landslip to which the doline in the area Obruk belongs. In this
case the carbon dioxide escaping from magmatic activity was solved
in the ground water. The CO2-enriched water solves the
lime in the subsoil. There originates a subterranean hollow cavity
which grows constantly, until the deck rock breaks finally.
The doline behind the cavaransery is hardly explored. The color
of the water can be very different. The often deep blue color
is explained by the reflection of the sky or with a high magnesium
content in the water.
Log-conditions:
- Take a photo to show the color of the water of the doline.
- - Describe the color and texture of the rock wall of the doline
in your own words (in english or german).
- What color is the water and the sky at the time of your
stay?
Send the answers to me using the function “send
message” und you can instantly log with your photo. It is not
necessary to wait for a log permission! However, I reserve for
myself to delete the log in case the photo is missing or the
answers are wrong.
