INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #689

"Dunmore's War"

This quest will bring you to the Williams Cemetery in Green Township or Morgan County. This pioneer cemetery has a lot of old graves and is just a short way off of highway 37. There is a pull-off for a single car. There was another cache here that was recently archived. When I had visited to get that cache I knew this was a perfect cemetery for a Spirit Quest cache. It would also make a good cemetery for a future restoration project.

Cornelius King, Veteran of the Dunmore's War Infantry

Cornelius King served in a company raised by Jacob Friend during Dunmore's War. This was a prelude to the Revolutionary War fought in 1774. Lord Dunmore, Governor of Virginia, raised troops from Virginia to combat uprisings amongst the Shawnee and Mingo Indians along the Ohio River. The Shawnee did not recognize a treaty signed with the Iroquois in 1768, ceding the land south of the Ohio River to the American colonies, and was trying to stop settlers from coming west.

The only large battle of the conflict was fought at Point Pleasant in what is now West Virginia. The Americans had 1100 troops present to combat 300-500 Indians. Greatly outnumbered, the Indians lost the battle but killed 75 Americans while wounding 150. The Indians had 33 casualties.

Jacob Friend's company had 20 survivors of the battle, including Cornelius King. A payroll form after the battle documents the surviving members of the company. Sergeant King earned 3 pounds and 12 shillings for 48 days of service.

Whether Cornelius King saw action against the British later in the actual Revolutionary War is unclear, although he was granted a veteran's pension after the war.

By 1785 he was living in Kentucky, eventually moving to Orange County Indiana and then on to Morgan County Indiana, where he died in 1839.

Sergeant King's grave is also a waymark for those who record waymark visits.

George Darrell, 7th Kentucky Cavalry

The 7th Kentucky Cavalry was mustered at Paris Kentucky on May23, 1862. This was a Union regiment. The Civil War was known as the war where brother fought brother. Kentucky was a border state that provided regiments to both the Confederacy and Union.

The 7th spent the war in the western theater. They took part in the Battle of Richmond Kentucky and the Atlanta campaign.

James Williams, Spanish-American War veteran

When the Spanish-American War broke out a call was made to all states to provide troops. The 2nd Indiana National Guard regiment was called to active duty and was renamed the 158th Indiana, as Indiana leaders decided to renumber regiments starting where they had left off in the Civil War.

Company K was made up of men from Morgan County. James Williams was from Centerton. He went in as a private, but when the regiment was mustered out a few months later he was a corporal. Company K also included Emmett Forrest Branch from nearby Martinsville. Branch went on to become Governor of Indiana in 1924.

The 158th never made it to Cuba and was only on active duty from May 10, 1898 until November 3, 1898. They spent their time at camps in Georgia and Tennessee.
