Geocache Description:

Lago San Pablo and Volcan Imbabura are in the province of Imbabura, Ecuador. If you are being guided, then your guide should make a stop in the MiraLago in order to have the best views to both.

San Pablo Lake.

Apparently the lake is an ancient closed basin formed in the bottom of the Andes by the irregular surface elevation of the valley floor. Most of the lake has depths of 30 meters, but there are shallow areas, especially in coastal areas. Its average temperature is 18oC. In the direct area of influence of lake settle the rural parishes of St. Paul, Eugenio Espejo, San Rafael Gonzalez Suarez and belonging to the Canton Otavalo, with a total population of 16,500 inhabitants whose population growth rate has turned negative in recent years as a result of heavy emigration largely due to saturation of the inputs. The area has the highest concentration of rural population, probably the highest in the inter-Andean region of the country. The main activity in the area is agriculture (30% of EAP), followed by manufacturing (29%), then services (14%), and other activities are significantly lower. Source of inspiration for poets and painters, with their symbolic character, mythical despite deteriorating conditions is the main attraction of Imbabura. Related to the Pan American highway is a paved road that circles the lake, making it feasible accessibility to various tourist facilities.

Imbabura Volcano.

Imbabura Volcano is located north of Quito, the capital of Ecuador, approximately 60 kilometers, in the province of the same name. With an approximate height of 4,600 meters. North of the volcano and its slopes, lies the city of Ibarra, and south, the beautiful San Pablo Lake, near the town of Otavalo. In Ecuador it is known as Taita (father in Quichua) Imbabura, in the Indian tradition is considered a sacred mountain. At his feet lies the Laguna de San Pablo, from which flows the water that is discharged by the waterfall Peguche equally sacred. Imbabura is an inactive volcano Strombolian eruption, but is monitored by volcanologists for showing latent. No records seismic activity, fumaroles or thermal. Its craters and cones, remain more variation and expeditions to the volcano, do not report any volcanic activity. The volcano, along with Cubilche, Azaya or Huarmi, Pangaladera, Cunrru and several cinder cones and adventitious cones, form the volcano called Imbabura. Imbabura is a cone rather than eroded, with a crater open to the east which it generally covered with snow. Several adventitious cones dominate its slopes, including the most important or Huarmi Azaya Imbabura westward bordering Lake San Pablo. Along San Pablo Lake is a small hill called cone Araque.

- In order to log the find of this earthcache you must go to MiraLago, to get the views of San Pablo lake and Imbabura Volcano. This is possible if you are in a tour and your guide makes a stop here. Otherwise it is very close to Otavalo and is possible to take a bus or taxi.

- On your tasks are the following, email me the answers:
1. Log a picture of yourself, GPS and volcano or lake must be included on the pic.
2. What is the altitude at the given coordinates?
3. What are some of the products sold at the store there?
4. What is the direction of the Imbabura volcano from that point?

If you want we can contact you with a bilingual driver to show around your caching travels (and travels in general) while in Ecuador.
