John Tyler was the first Vice President to become President upon
the death of a President. Legend has it that Tyler was on the floor
playing marbles when he heard the news that President William Henry
Harrison had died. Tyler was a stubborn, arrogant, pro-slavery
bigot who had many enemies. He vetoed nearly every bill that came
to his desk, especially anything to do with road building or
expansion. Critics referred to him as "His Accidency." During the
Civil War, Tyler renounced his American Citizenship, making him the
only ex-President who did not die a U.S. Citizen.
