An easily-found, traditional cache located alongside a public

east. PLEASE REPLACE THE CACHE PROPERLY AND COVER IT WITH
LEAVES, GRASS OR BRANCHES.
Woodgreen's network of footpaths or droves was established in the
late 1700s. The Alley, Love Lane, Grace Lane, Trim's Drove, and
Steels Drove all connect the Avon valley with the elevated common
to the south east and the forest beyond. The area bordered by
Trim's Drove (also spelt 'Trimm'), the High Street and Brook Lane
has been known as Merrie (or Merry) Gardens since at least 1848. It
is still the name of the postal district and, since it does not
relate to a road name, causes much confusion to delivery men (and
women). Merrie Gardens was an orchard growing, amongst other
fruits, 'Merry' cherries. The 'Merry' cherry was a type of wild
cherry, probably introduced by the Huguenots in the 18th century,
and cultivated widely in the south-west of England. The name is
derived from the French word for this type of wild cherry:
'merise'. Also known as the Mazzard cherry, it is now virtually
extinct. Merrie Gardens was also known for cider making and was the
site of an annual 'harvest' festival, the Merry Fair, to celebrate
and extensively test the latest brew. The fair was banned in about
1900 because of its excessive rowdiness!
