The canal still used in rural Oliver, the town named for the canal's creator, can be viewed from many locations on a leisurely and scenic drive, amongst the lush green orchards. Parking coordinates N 49 08.795 , W 119 35.108
Former Preimer of British Columbia (1917-1927) John Oliver in an attempt to establish a settlement for unemployed World War 1 veterans, formed the South Okanagan Lands Project. This ambitious plan would have the veterans build a 23 mile long irrigation canal from Vaseux Lake to the US border. The canal referred to by the locals of the time as "the ditch", began construction in 1918 and reached the US border in 1927. Veterans were to be the perferred settlers as the semi-arid land became irrigated.
