Geocache Description:

This cache is located on road R323 between Riversdale and Ladismith

The first fight for independance in Afrcia was the struggle between the two Afrikaans Republics , Die Zuid Afrikaanse Republic and the Republic of the Orange Free State on the one hand and the mighty British Empire on the other.
British imperialism and the British desire to have control of the wealth from gold and diamond mines were the main reasons for this war. It was an unequal battle.
The republics had a total population of 300 000 as apposed to Britain's 30 million, plus thousands of volunteers from her colonies.
The first part of the war was conventional.Well known battles took place at Magersfontein, Spionkop and Vaalkrans to mention but a few.The British forces were too powerful for this type of warefare and after the capital cities had been occupied by the British, the Boere commandos changed their tactics to attack and retreat. This continued for more than a year and a half. During this phase of the war, Lord Kitchener implemented his "Scorched Earth Policy" and 30,000 farms and 40 towns were burned to the ground. The woman and children of the Boere Commandos were forced into concentration camps where 28,000 died - 16,000 under the age of 16. Due to Kitchener's destruction of the rural areas, thousands of black people were also forced in to camps. 22,000 are reported to have died.
Many Boere(Farmers) Generals attacked the British controlled Cape Colony. Gideon Scheepers was a young man with exceptional bravery and leadership qualities who did anything in his power to ensure the independence and freedom of his country and people. At the age of 23 he was promoted to Commandant. He and his men were operational in the South-East Cape and the Karoo area. After being seriously ill for a couple of months, he eventually had to surrender to the British troops. On the 18th December 1901 he was charged and found guilty as a rebel in a military court of law in Graaff Reinette.
On the 18th of January 1902 he died in front of a firing squad and was buried in a unmarked grave at an unknown destination so that he would not be remembered as a martyr for the Afrikaner cause.
Gideon Scheepers's memory will continue to be an inspiration for many young people. It was for this reason that the Voortrekkers of Riversdale erected a monument for Commandant Gideon Scheepers on the farm Miertjieskraal on the 10th October 2006, where he and his men once over night.
