Jan Theron Monument
On October 11, 1899 the Anglo Boer War, also known as the Boer War broke out. The two small republics namely the Zuid Afrikaanse Republic and the republic of the Orange Free State defended their freedom against the mighty British Empire. British Imperialism wanted the republics under British rule due to the large gold and diamond wealth that had been discovered.
It was an unequal struggle. The Republics less than 60,000 men against the British professional army and its colonies. More than half a million British soldiers were deployed for this war.. The first part of the war was conventional and a few famous battles which occurred during the time were Colenso, Magersfontein, Spion Kop, and Vaalkrans to mention but a few. The English forces were too powerful and the capitals Pretoria and Bloemfontein were occupied. This however did not mean surrender for the Boere(farmers).
The next phase of the war started when small Boere(farmers) commandos began to attack the British forces and inflict great losses. During this period, Lord Kitchener began with his "Scorched Earth Policy" which completely destroyed 30,000 farms and 40 villages. Women and children were incarcerated in concentration camps, where nearly 28,000 died - 16,000 under 16 years.
Kitherner's Scorched Earth Policy, forced him to place thousands of black people in camps as well, where the appalling conditions caused 22,000 to die.
During the phase of the war, many Boere(famers) generals attacked the Cape colony which was under British control to alleviate the pressure on the Boers in the Transvaal and Orange Free State. One of the Commandos was led by Commandant Jan Theron who came into contact with British forces near Soebatsvlakte in the Riversdale district on 12 September 1901. This was the southern most battle of the entire war. A monument was erected on 12 September 2001 at the exact spot where the battle had taken place. On the inscription is indicated where the various forces were deployed. The English incurred substantial losses.
The bitter war ended with the "Treaty of Vereeniging" on May 31,1902. It left 2,000 British graves on the fields of South Africa. this left the Boere(farmers) republics impoverished. 4,000 were killed in action and 2,000 died due to accidents and illnesses. this, together with the 28,000 who died in camps, greatly reduced the numbers of Afrikaaners in relationship to other cultural groups in the country.
The Afrikaner retained their pride and their dream of independence finally came true when they became a republic on May 31,1961.
