Si racconta che in antichi tempi, nella Piazza dei Signori o dalla Porta dei Santi Quaranta a Santa Maria Maggiore venivano frustate le meretrici che avessero commesso un’infrazione alle norme degli statuti cittadini, ovvero ad esempio, che fossero venute in città in giorni diversi da quelli permessi ossia il giovedì e il sabato, giorni di mercato in cui potevo venire a procurarsi le cose necessarie alla vita; però, per non essere confuse con le donne oneste, dovevano portare in capo un cappuccio rosso sormontato da un sonaglio.
Portate con voi una penna per il log e attenzione ai muggles.

It is narrated that in ancient time, in Piazza dei Signori or from Porta dei Santi Quaranta to Santa Maria Maggiore prostitutes were whipped if they had committed an infraction to the city rules such as coming to town in days different from the ones permitted, thursdays and saturdays, the days of markets where they would come to buy foods and things needed.; but, so not to be confused with other women they had to wear on their heads a red cap with a jingle bell on top of it.
