Back in the last 1990s Evergreen Lake was raised by 5ft to help supply Bloomington enough water for the next decade or two. This changed Evergreen Lake from about a 700 acre lake to around 900 acres as the water level claimed a larger perimeter. Water is pumped from Evergreen Lake to the water processing plant at Lake Bloomington to help keep from depleting too much water at the primary source, Lake Bloomington. In order to pump the water there is the Pump House at the above coordinates. Some time you can hear the loud pumps from inside the brick building. If you look out West from the South side of the Pump House you sometimes see the water bubbling around a large red round float out a few hundred feet.
To Find The Cache: The geocache is not at the coordinates listed above. This is an offset cache. To find this cache use the bearing and distance from two different coordinates: - 223 feet from the coordinates given above for the Pump House. - The very tall North Electrical Tower is at a bearing of 267 degrees from the cache location. The coordinates of the North Electrical Tower are at N 40° 38.980 W 089° 03.008
To Find The Cache (New and Improved Directions To Help Think Through This added 9/8/2019):
Given Geocache Facts Are As follows:
- A few steps East of Pump House at N 40° 38.988 W 089° 02.400 (same coordinates as above)
- Cache is located 223 feet from the Pump House coordinates provided
- North Electrical Tower at N 40° 38.980 W 89° 3.008
- Cache is located at a bearing from the cache 267 degrees to the North Electrical Tower
Suggested Plan Of Attack:
Picture in your mind a circle around the Pump House coordinate at 223 feet radios and line through that circle from the cache location to the Electrical Tower. When you draw a line through a circle it intersects in two spots. For some this may drum up memories of Geometry class in high school. Now follow these basic steps to find the cache pretty quickly:
- Stand at the coordinates of the Pump House and then change the coordinates as a goto the Electrical Tower. Using your GPS screen fields determine what our bearing currently is.
- Adjust your position so that your bearing becomes 267 degrees instead of what you are currently.
- From that new position you can create an imaginary line from the tower and extending through where you are standing. At this point you know the cache is somewhere on this virtual line. Note the objects within the virtual line.
- Now put a goto back at the Pump House coordinate and walk along that virtual line in a direction of one way or the other that you can safely be at 223 feet away.
- If needed switch between the Electrical Tower to check the bearing and the Pump House coordinates to check your distance.
Note: A very accurate compass may also be something to try to get the bearing to the Electrical Tower, but the GPS will work if you know how to show the bearing. You can also play with Google Earth. Feel free to share what you tried or learned without giving anything away.
