Geocache Description:

This cache is the first in a series commemoration the various aircraft I flew as a pilot in my 20-year Air Force career. Some of these aircraft are viewable in storage at the Air Force Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), more commonly known as "The Boneyard." Others are on display at the Pima Air and Space Museum. There are several C-141 Starlifters still in storage at the Boneyard.

The C-141 Starlifter was the first aircraft I was assigned to after graduating from pilot training in 1968. I underwent aircrew training in the Starlifter at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma, with my follow-on assignment to the 3rd Military Airlift Squadron at Charleston AFB, SC. I flew the C-141 there for a little over 10 months, accumulating about 1000 flying hours in that aircraft. My travels in the Starlifter included many trips to Southeast Asia transferring troops and equipment into and out of Vietnam. I also flew into Europe, Africa, Asia, South and Central America and conducted airdrops of troops and supplies.

Like most young pilots graduating from pilot training, I wanted a fighter assignment, but the powers-that-be assigned me to the C-141 and although it wasn't a fighter, it was a darned good aircraft - powerful, maneuverable and very reliable. I thoroughly enjoyed my comparitively short tour in the Starlifter prior to receiving my orders to Southeast Asia in another aircraft. But that is a another story for another cache.
