Geocache Description:

This cache is a clear tupperware-like container. It should be a fairly easy find at a very interesting location.

The Yorkville Female College was founded on this site in 1852 and continued until it became the Yorkville Graded School in 1889. The original building burned on November 16, 1900 due to a chimney fire and a new building was erected in 1902. The central portion and east wing of the building were added in 1922. It became the York Elementary School in 1951 when grades 9 – 12 moved to the newly built high school (now Harold C. Johnson Middle). The building underwent renovations in 1956 with the addition of a new brick annex that included a cafeteria and more classrooms. In 1973, the school was renamed McCelvey Elementary School in honor of Mr. George C. McCelvey, who was principal from 1912 – 1948. The last day of school held in the building was June 4, 1987. Since 1987, the McCelvey Center has operated as a community and performing arts center and is now a part of the Culture & Heritage Museums of York County. It includes the Historical Center of York County, a local history and genealogy research room, and the Southern Revolutionary War Institute, a scholarly facility for studying the American Revolution in the Southern colonies.

This cache is part of the "York County History Series". The York County Geocaching Organization and the Rock Hill/York County Convention & Visitor Bureau welcomes you to participate. Get your passport from either of the above websites then complete the challenge by finding 12 of the 16 caches listed and answering the questions on your passport. All answers will be short answers found at the cache locations. You can then turn in the passport at the York County Visitor Center to receive the limited edition York County History Series geocoin! These coins are only available while supplies last. After that, the caches will remain but the coins will be gone!

NOTE: You only need to answer the question for the passport. You can log the cache as a find without answering the question.
