This cache
is placed to highlight Combers "Ghaist" or "Ghost"
hole.
In the 18th Century
Excise officers supervised trading and tax collection in Strangford
Lough, where smuggling of items such as rum, wine, sugar, tea, and
whiskey was commonplace. The Ghaist hole on Killinchy Road was a
favourite spot for landing these illicit cargoes, and it is said
that the smugglers suspended a white sheet over the road to
frighten the passers by. This was the Ghaist, or
Ghost.
Today this area of
the river is used by the local cruising club the "Comber
Navy."
A parking waypoint has been
added for your safety in a lay-by just off the roundabout.
Please take extreme care crossing this road !
The cache is placed close to the cycle path which runs
along the bank. Please use a lot of discretion and care as
the area is used by dog walkers, fishermen and cyclists. Also
take care if you are crossing the very busy road.
