2020 update: The Diamondbark American Beech has now been cut down but new trees have been propagated. A new tree variety was discovered here in 2001! Cultivated Isotype:Diamondbark American Beech TM. FAGUS grandifolia. Estimated 125 years old, unique in it has shallowly fissured bark which cracks with age to form a diamond-shaped pattern. American Beech trees typically have a smooth bark. This tree was damaged during Hurricane Ike in Sept. 2008, losing half of the tree. Ferncliff has obtained a patent on this one-of-a-kind tree. The process of propagating this new tree species is under way. Ferncliff contains 240 acres with cliffs, waterfalls, pond, and over 50 tree species, four of which are Ohio Champions (the largest of its kind in the state). The “SH” in the cache name above signifies a Spirit Hunt, for area caches in cemeteries or memorial gardens. Permission granted by Stanley Spitler, superintendent. The Cemetery grounds are open from 7:30 A.M. to 6:00 P.M (5 P.M. in winter) daily. No dogs or beverages allowed outside the car.
