The YMCA in Jamestown is an organization that pre-dates the Civil War. Initially maintaining bible study and self-improvement classes, the organization opened a camp in Dewittville in 1898, and in 1901 opened a facility in the City of Jamestown at Third and Prendergast Streets, now the site of the post office. The building boasted the first indoor swimming pool in the city along with meetings rooms, and a gymnasium.
The Third Street building was rapidly outgrown however as the city’s population grew from 23,000 at the turn of the century to approximately 45,000 by 1926. The present building at the corner of Fourth and Pine Streets was dedicated with the placement of a time capsule in the cornerstone in 1929. The building featured a pool, handball courts, gymnasium, showers, reading rooms, banquet hall, meeting rooms, billiards rooms, lunch cafe and dormitory rooms for men who came to work in the factories.
Originally built to serve the needs of single men, today the Jamestown YMCA it is a vibrant center of activity with programming for all genders, ages, and all levels of physical ability or socio-economic status at three locations in the City of Jamestown, and Camp Onyahsa in Dewittville.
This is a VERY HIGH MUGGLE area, so this cache will not last long unless all cache seekers are extremely stealthy. Bring your own pen.
