This cache is placed near a wetland developed by Ducks Unlimited Canada several years ago. The man made wetland is the pond with the island in the middle, all nestled in the bend of the river. Before I retired I drove past the area every day on my way home from the office. It was interesting to regularly observe the area as waterfowl began to be frequent visitors and seasonal residents. My wife and I were thrilled in the spring of 2009 to see ducks and Canada Geese, both with their young, swimming across the pond! As I placed the cache there were actually six or seven ducks swimming in the pond and what I believe to be a heron doing a slow fly-past and graceful landing - all in the first week of November!
As of the date of placement of this cache, Ducks Unlimited Canada has been in existence for over 65 years and has completed more than 7,100 wetland habitat projects across the nation. It has become Canada’s leading expert in wetland and wildlife conservation. It also works with partners from Canada, the United States and Mexico through the North American Waterfowl Management Plan to conserve wetlands across North America.
Please note: it is not necessary to enter the wetland area or, for that matter, even leave the roadbed in order to retrieve this cache. In fact, entering the wetland during nesting season or when there are young present could potentially be harmful to the nesting ducks and geese or the ducklings and goslings themselves.
Be sure to bring a pen or pencil - there won't be one in the cache!
The cache owner, who is a member of Ducks Unlimited Canada, also has an earthcache at another nearby DUC wetland reclamation site. See GC2DTXB - Miner's Marsh Earthcache.
Congratulations to roxy1rose on her first FTF! She will be receiving a Tim Hortons card on me!
