Geocache Description:

Stureparken

Sattelitmottagningen är dålig på platsen.

Stureparken [SWE]

Stureparken [ENG]
In 1670 "Kongel: Amiralitetz Nye Kyrckegårdh" was built here for the royal mariners who died in the war against Denmark. The cemetery was enclosed by a fence, and there was also a bell tower.

When the Admiralty was moved in the 1680s to Karlskrona the cemetery become a cemetery for the poor. During the 1710 plague came countless graves and new land masses were added. In 1834 many cholera victims was buried here. A few years later there was a renovation, a new fence was built and the old shed for the dead bodies was tarred. At the same time new shrubs and trees was planted.

The Poor Cemetery was used to the 1866, in total about 10,000 people consecrated to his final resting place.

In the 1880s the area was renovated, and the tombstones were removed. Plans were to build a church or a public school. Instead it became a public park, which was named Stureparken after the new Sturengatan. Cemetery fence was removed in 1905. Today Stureparken a protected ancient monument, there is no trace visible of the cemetery, except when the county summer employees found bone fragment.
