Dieser Earthcache führt euch zum Naturkundlichen Museum von Leipzig, das auf Initiative von Emil Adolf Roßmäßler gegründet wurde. Aquarianern wird sein Kürzel ROSSM. vielleicht bekannt vorkommen, doch weniger bekannt ist, das Roßmäßler bereits 1840 Schriften mit dem Thema " Die Beiträge zur Versteinerungskunde" verfasst hat.

Die Schwerpunkte der Ausstellungen liegt in der Darstellung der Geologie, Biologie und Archäologie Nordwestsachsens. Die Geologische Ausstellung enthält neben der »Geologischen Uhr« die deren Eingang kennzeichnet, Informationen über wichtige Epochen der Erdgeschichte und ihrer Zeugnisse in Nordwestsachsen. Zu den Themen gehören u.a. permischer Vulkanismus, die Entstehung der Braunkohle und die Eiszeiten. Zu zwei der Exponate die sich auch damit befassen möchten wir euch hiermit führen.
Die zwei verkieselten Baumstümpfe befinden sich vor dem Museum und können von jedem kostenlos besichtig werden. Die beiden stammen aus einem Tagebau südöstlich von Leipzig und lagerten dort in der Braunkohle. Der Prozess der Versteinerung von Holz war nur dadurch möglich das verhindert wurde, dass das Holz verrottet. Das bedeutet dass die Sauerstoffzufuhr unterbrochen worden ist sowie ein Schutz vor Mikroorganismen bestand. Geschehen konnte dies durch Einschließung (Verschüttung) in vulkanischen Aschen und Tuffen nach einem Vulkanausbruch. Dies ist ein Grund dafür, dass viele versteinerte Wälder in der Region mit (ehemaliger) vulkanischer Aktivität zu finden sind.
Eine weitere Möglichkeit zur Entstehung von versteinertem Holz ist, dass in Wasser versunkenen Hölzern rasch durch Überdeckung mit Sediment in ein entsprechendes Milieu geraten. Bei diesen Konstellationen und dem vorhanden sein geeigneter Lösungen war es möglich das das Holz entweder verkieselte, vererzte, phosphorisierte oder "calcitisierte". Bei der Verkieselung werden die organischen Stoffe des Holzes durch Kieselsäure (SiO2) ersetzt. Dort bildet sich zunächst amorphes SiO2. Dieses ist allerdings nicht stabil und wandelt sich über Opal-A und Opal-CT schließlich zu Quarz um. Die Geschwindigkeit der Kristallisation ist unter anderem abhängig von den Druck- und Temperaturbedingungen. Während des Überganges von Opal zu Quarz kann die Struktur des Holzes verloren gehen. Bei einer "Trockenen" Versteinerung (Inkohlung), das bedeutet wenn die nötigen Lösungen nicht vorhanden sind, entsteht aus dem Holz unter Druck, erst Torf, dann Braunkohle, Steinkohle, Anthrazit und dann Graphit. This cache will lead you to the Museum of Natural History in Leipzig, which was founded by an initiative of Emil Adolf Rossmaessler. The abbreviation ROSSM aquarium might seem familiar. Less known is that in 1840, Rossmaessler has written publications on the topic "Contributions to the palaeontology".
The focus of the exhibition is in the representation of geology, biology and archaeology of northwest Saxony. The geological exhibition includes the "Geological Clock," which indicates the entrance to the geological exhibit. The exhibit also includes information about major eras of geological history and their testimonies in northwest Saxony, Germany. Among the topics are Permian volcanism, the origin of brown coal and ice ages. We lead you to two exhibits about this topic.
The two silicified tree stumps are located outside the museum and can be visited free of charge. Both come from a mine south of Leipzig where they where found laying in the lignite. The process of fossilization of wood was possible only because the wood was prevented from rotting. The oxygen supply had been cut off and the wood was protected against microorganisms. This was achieved by burying the wood in volcanic ash (entombment) and tuffs after a volcanic eruption. This is the reason many fossilized forests can be found in the region of (former) volcanic activity.
Another way fossilized wood can form is under water. To achieve the required environment for fossilization the wood needs to be quickly covered with sediments. If these conditions and also the appropriate solutions were available the wood either silicified, mineralized, phosphorescized or "calcitisierte". During the silification the organic substances of the wood are replaced by silica (SiO2). First amorphous SiO2 is formed. This however is unstable and transforms itself to opal-A then opal-CT and finally to quartz. The rate of crystallization is amongst other things dependent on the pressure and temperature conditions. During the transition from opal to quartz the structure of the wood can be lost. In a "dry" fossilization (carbonization) the necessary solutions are not available, so that under pressure the timber forms only into peat, then coal, hard coal, anthracite and then graphite.
