Another in our series remembering the times when a stage coach was the only way to travel between Albany and Perth.
In the mid 1800's public pressure from vested farming interests led to the decision by the British government to send convicts to Western Australia as a source of labour. Many of these convicts gained their ticket of leave, but were forbidden from travelling outside their own district. Others escaped and met various fates. One of these, known as Moondyne Joe, became a bushranger.
Police enforced the travel rules by challenging any stranger with the question "Bond or free?". Although many settlers were sympathetic to ex-convicts, they led a hard life.
A police trooper would accompany each stage coach to guard against lawlessness. This cache is set near the grave of Trooper Thomas Knibbs who died in 1855 at the tender age of 21. A plaque at the grave tells the story of his sad end.
The cache is a magnetic mint tin hidden in an obvious spot. Be careful crossing the road if you're travelling south. You can park near the cache or walk down from the roadhouse in the old building on the other side of the Bannister river.
