Koyasan Okunoin is the grave of Kobo-Daishi (AD774-835), a famous evangelist of Buddhism, Shingon-shu.
Since Kobo-Daishi built the Kongo-fuji Temple on top of Koyasan Mountain, Koyasan has been an important training place for many Buddhists to stay. When Kobo-Daishi died, the grave was set at Okunoin. Today, Okunoin maintains graves of a number of historical figures such as Toyotomi Hideyoshi who built the Osaka Castle to once rule the country. The atmosphere of Okunoin is quite Japanese being surrounded by centuries-old big trees.
A cache is hidden near the grave of the Kobo-Taishi.
