Geocache Description:

Located in Beggs Point Park in the Village of Essex.

This small cache is located in a family friendly park in the Historic Village of Essex NY. The area surrounding the cache has seen several centuries of transformation. A boat works was once located around the geocache site that built the gunships that helped Commodore Thomas Macdonough win the Battle of Plattsburgh in 1814. Theodore Roosevelt called this "the greatest naval battle of the war". In later years the area immediately to the North of the Geocache was the site of a huge factory that produced horseshoe nails. At it's peak, this factory was one of the largest horseshoe nail factories in the world until it burned in 1918. Old nails, ore remnants, and brick from the chimney can still be found around the nearby beaches.

Be very cautious of nearby potential muggles that frequent this area for swimming and picnicking.

If you are bringing children, please enjoy the nearby new playground equipment. This equipment was purchased by the Town of Essex due to donations from the Barbara Jackson memorial playground fund.
