Geocache Description:

Quick and easy cache in the Kloofendal nature reserve. Please note that the park is open between 6am and 6pm. Cache is a magnetic micro with only a logsheet. Bring your own pen.

On May 17th the 124 year old Stampmill returned to it's new foundation in the Kloofendal Nature Reserve. Come and have a look at this wonderful old mining equipment and enjoy a day in the park.

The origin of the Sandy Croft stampmill.

The original Sandy Croft Stampmill was brought in by Harry and Fred Struben from England in December 1884 and it came to stand on the bank of the Wilgespruit stream below the present Christiaan de Wet Road.

It crushed the gold-bearing rock mined by the Struben brothers initially and later on rock from other mines as well.

The construction of Christiaan de Wet Road would have destroyed the mill as it stood in the way of the construction.

Elizabeth Viljoen, curator of the Roodepoort Museum at the time, had the mill moved to the corner of Goldman and Seventh Streets, Florida, where it had been standing for many years,
In the last 10 years it had not been receiving any attention despite the fact that the Department of Arts, Culture and Heritage had the mill refurbished in 2006.

The Confidence Reef, the first goldmine on the Witwatersrand, is situated in the Kloofendal Nature Reserve.
