Every pearl is unique and of extraordinary beauty, just as the beaches along the waterfront of Qualicum are. I have named this series of ten beach caches, "String of Pearls", because every cache site is truly an exceptional pearl and cachers should have the opportunity of visiting and enjoying all of them. Enjoy this unique "String of Pearls".
As you drive to this cache, you will see a marshy area on the land side of the road. This is the Marshall-Stevenson Bird Sanctuary that is administrated by the Canadian Wildlife Service. This eighty acre piece of land was a gift to the federal government in May, 1974, by Mr. & Mrs. Sherwood Marshall for the purpose of the preservation of wildlife.
The area at one time, was a research and administrative center for the Canadian Wildlife Service and open to the public with nature walks and viewing platforms, but due to cutbacks in the 1980s, the area is now closed to the public except for special events and the occasional guided tour.
The original log home of Mr. Thomas Kinkade is on this property and can be seen from the road. He was the first settler to register land in the Qualicum area, which was 160 acres at the mouth of the Little Qualicum River.
This is another public beach access with lots of available parking and has the added bonus of another cache further down the beach toward the river. Great views, great beach, and lots of wildlife available for you to watch. I hope you enjoy this very unique pearl in the string.
Congratulations to ceebeecee for FTF
