Part of the Historical Holmfirth series. The others are: The Holmfirth Branch Line; Holmfirth’s Blue Plaques; Holmfirth's Industrial Heritage; and The Holmfirth Tiger. This multi takes you on a tour of five memorials around the town; all easily accessible in less than an hour. Then a quick mathematical puzzle will lead you to a micro cache.
Holmfirth has been subject to many floods over the years; from the first recorded in 1738 to the most recent in 2002. There are memorials and reminders around the town which, once visited, will enable you to solve the puzzle and find the cache. The coordinates given are for suggested long stay parking, although there are many car parks in Holmfirth to choose from.
The first recorded flood was in 1738 and was a result of severe rainstorms which caused the River Holme to burst its banks and flood the valley. On that occasion damage was limited to farmland and no lives were lost.
In 1777 the River Holme burst its banks again, following a severe storm and flooded the valley. Three lives were lost and the church built in 1476 was swept away.
The most famous Holmfirth flood was in 1852 following a period of heavy rain. A reservoir burst its banks and released 86 million gallons of water down the valley. 81 people were killed and many buildings were destroyed, included four mills, ten dye houses, three drying stoves, 27 cottages, seven tradesmen’s houses, seven shops, seven bridges crossing the River Holme, and ten warehouses.
In 1944, on Whit Monday, a cloudburst caused the River Holme to burst its banks yet again. This flood was named ‘the forgotten flood’ as it occurred just a few days before the Allied invasion of Normandy.
