Geocache Description:

Every pearl is unique and of extraordinary beauty, just as the beaches along the waterfront of Qualicum are. I have named this series of ten beach caches, "String of Pearls", because every cache site is truly an exceptional pearl and cachers should have the opportunity of visiting and enjoying all of them. Enjoy this lovely pearl in this "String of Pearls"

A rough dirt wagon trail was finally pushed along the coast from Parksville to end at Memorial Ave. in 1894. Memorial itself, was nothing more than a dusty or muddy track, depending on the season. The top of a stump, located where the Old Dutch Inn sits now, was used as a rustic post office by the settlers, who could pick up their mail from it, when it was dropped off by a local who had made the long trek to and from Parksville.

A small school house, established in 1896, sat where the gas station sits now, but the school closed three years later for lack of students. Even by 1910, there were probably not more than one hundred people living within a ten mile radius.

Look around, time has brought many changes to Memorial Ave., but one thing that will never change - the beach at the end of this road. It was a unique pearl then and continues with it's luster today. Enjoy
