King's (Cache) Quest - Chapter 1 Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

FizorZed: This series was one of my most favorite things to have created. We truly enjoyed reading about all of the adventures this series created for you. However the sun has set on Kingdom of Daventry and it's time close this chapter of King's Cache Quest. I hope to do a sequel in the future as there are many, many more stories to tell. Please take time to revisit the classics of Sierra On-Line, particularly King's Quest that inspired this cache series. Many are available to play on the internet.

Geocache Description:

KING'S (CACHE) QUEST
A TRIBUTE TO MY FAVORITE CHILDHOOD GAME

Original box art of the game

A screen shot from the original 1984 game

INTRODUCTION

Video games today are pretty sweet with all their wiz-bang graphics, surround sound, and internets playability. Phooey! Being a kid back in 1984 was an awesome time because if you were lucky enough to have top of the line Apple IIE with its 64k of memory and dual 5 1/4 floppy drive you got to play an adventure game that was ahead of its time.

King’s Quest debuted as the first game with a user controlled, animated character that inhabited a 16 color, "3D" world, (the character could navigate in front of and behind objects). The player interacted with the world by typing commands such as "pick up rock" or "look at castle", or "talk to king".

Though rudimentary, it immersed the player into a world that was totally non-linear and completely addicting, and as many critics pointed out, maddeningly frustrating. But screw the critics! I was a kid, and I loved this game. Inhabiting the persona of Sir Graham, the bravest knight in all the land, I was on a quest to save the Kingdom, darn it!

As a child I vividly remember being taken to the far away land of Daventry where monsters were real and hidden passages led to treasure. My friends and I spent hours solving riddles in our quest to inherit the throne.

When I discovered GeoCaching a short while ago, and made my first find while on my lunch break at work, I experienced (for the first time in a long time) that same giddiness and sense of adventure I did when I was a kid playing King's Quest.

DESCRIPTION

This is a 15 stage cache that recreates the game of King's Quest via Geocaching. How the heck does that work you ask? Well, you'll just have to venture on out and see for yourself! I spent countless hours in this area as a kid running through the woods, building forts, and exploring the unknown. Over the years our family discovered many interesting locations and beautiful hikes that you will enjoy as part of the adventure. It only seemed fitting to place this series in an area where my imagination ran wild in my youth just as it did when I hunkered down in front of my old Apple IIE with King's Quest on a cold, rainy day.

If you are going to try to tackle this series in one day I suggest getting an early start. While none of the caches are individually all that difficult to find, the journey itself will take some time. Have fun, and good luck!

Congratulations 8NutsMotherGoose on FTF for the entire series! He completed the quest on one long, and very cold day. Many Knights would have faltered under that kind of pressure. His logs for each cache are definitely worth a read. They are very entertaining! Congratulations 8Nuts!
