THE BLACK WALNUT -A TOXIC AVENGER
The black walnut (Juglans nigra), produces a toxic substance that can be harmful to nearby plants. The trees produce the toxin juglone, which inhibits respiration in nearby plants, causing growth to be retarded, stunted, or deformed. This can even kill some plant species. Take a look at the black walnut trees near GZ. On the other side of the trail, an informational sign will point them out to you.
Lava and I were wondering why many of the other nearby tree trunks were"squiggly" shaped. We now know it is from the toxic black walnut tree. This part of the River Winds Nature Trail definitely has a creepy forest feel thanks to the black walnut's toxic roots. Check it out!
