Geocache Description:

This cache is to honor fallen Texas Ranger Bobby Paul Doherty, and is located very near the monument placed to memorialize his sacrifice. The monument is engraved with the following:

“WE THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS
ACKNOWLEDGE AND THANK TEXAS RANGER
BOBBY PAUL DOHERTY FOR THE GREAT
SACRIFICE HE MADE TO KEEP THE PUBLIC SAFE.
HIS EFFORTS WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME.
MAY GOD BLESS HIS SOUL.
FEBRUARY 21, 1978”

On February 20, 1978, Texas Ranger Bobby Paul Doherty was shot and killed while attempting to arrest narcotics suspect Greg Ott at the Twin Pines Ranch off Hickory Hill Rd. in Argyle. Ott was a graduate student at North Texas State University, which is now the University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton. As Ranger Doherty kicked in the door he was shot in the head by a .38 caliber revolver, and fatally wounded. Ott was apprehended and sentenced to life, but was released on parole in 2004.

Ranger Doherty had been with the Department of Public Safety for 20 years and had been a Texas Ranger for 18 months. He was the first Texas Ranger to die in the line of duty in 47 years. He was survived by his wife and two children, and is buried in Azle, Texas.

Congratulations to auctnr for FTF!
