Geocache Description:

One of my favourite drives in the Nicosia region, most people eschew this area in favour of Troodos, however, these “mountains” are much closer and have some interesting sights/views along the way. We hope you enjoy a taste of rural Nicosia.

How to get there: Leave the Limassol-Nicosia motorway at exit 6 and take the road to Tseri. At the village, go right onto the E901, signposted to Nicosia, then go left at the sign for Deftera. Go right at the sign for Deftera. Go right at the end of this road and then straight along, past Psimolofou, Pera etc and the road takes you up to Machairas roundabout. Follow the right hand turn to get onto the Machairas route. This will take you across the mountain range and down the other side, which is clearly signposted to take you back into Nicosia. Easy as pie!
Food and Drink: There are a few kiosks on the way but please take water with you. There are toilets and water facilities at the Machairas picnic site.
Machairas Monastery was founded in 1148. The centuries-old monks’ cells, stables and cellars are fascinating, and there is a fine collection of superbly executed icons including the icon of Panagia of Machairas, attributed to Agios Loukas the Evangelist. The brotherhood is extremely devout, keeping vows as strict as those of Mount Athos in Greece. No cameras are allowed inside the monastery, however I doubt this is a problem at the Afxentiou museum/area. Open Monday - Friday: 08:30 - 17:30.
Fikardou village has been declared an ancient monument and carefully restored to preserve the 18th century houses with their remarkable woodwork and folk architecture. Two of these houses (Katsinoros and Achilleas Dimitri) have been turned into museums containing rural items and other items associated with rural life. The village received the Europa Nostra Award in 1987. Open Tues-Fri 09:30 to 16:00, Sat 09:30-15:30, Sun 10:30-13:30
