In German there are three additional characters called "Umlaut" (German plural: "Umlaute", but usually umlauts in English): ä, ö, ü.
Since these characters don't exist on an English keyboard (they do exist on German keyboards!), sometimes the umlaut dots above the "a", "o", "u" are simply omitted. Unfortunately, this often changes the meaning of the word - and sometimes quite drastically. For example, recently I noticed that in a concert program the word "mässig" (measured) that described how a movement was supposed to be played had been written as "massig", which means "massive" (and could also be interpreted as "fat").
As an aside, the proper way to transcribe an umlaut when the real thing is not available on the keyboard is to add an "e" after the regular letter, i.e. "ae", "oe", "ue". So in the example, the word for "measured" should have been written "maessig".
Below are a few more examples where omitting the dots to properly identify an umlaut can change the meaning of the word - sometimes a little bit, sometimes quite lot. Some of the words are the result of conjugation or declination and you will likely only find their base form in a dictionary, which may make this task slightly harder, but probably still not all that hard with all the online tools available these days.

The walk to the cache is short and level; the terrain rating refers only to the last 20-30 feet. Some people will probably think 3 stars is overrating the terrain, others might find it quite challenging. But for comparison (not that it means much), Loch Cache would probably rate this terrain a 1.5.
