Between Newport and Caerphilly lies the 'HILL of PEARS' Cache
placed with the kind permission of The Ruperra
Conservation Trust
With sweeping views over the Severn Channel, Ruperra's footpaths
wind up to an iron age hill fort and then onto a to a ruined
castle, which appears out of nowhere from between the trees.
The re-planting of native trees is restoring the area to its former
glory as an ancient woodland. Ruperra’s historical importance
is now matched by this return of biodiversity, making it an ideal
place for nature spotting.
Coed Craig Ruperra, a 150 acre woodland between Newport and Cardiff
in South Wales, U.K.Grid Ref.ST223 866, is owned by Ruperra
Conservation Trust. The woodland originally formed part of the
large Ruperra estate and is situated to the north of the ruined
Ruperra Castle. It lies in a Special Landscape Area, while the
entire Ruperra Parkland is a Conservation Area and graded II on the
Cadw/ICOMOS register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic
Interest in Wales
Situated along the Lower Rhymney Circular Walk bewteen Draethen and
Ruperra Castle. The track can get muddy and is steep near GZ.
