Soms vind je wel eens wat. En dan heb je geen idee wat je er mee moet. Zo kwam ik laatst tussen een berg computerschroot deze monitor tegen. Het leek alsof er iets in het beeld was ingebrand. Dat had je vroeger met die dingen als ze lang hetzelfde scherm lieten zien. Toch was er wat geks mee aan de hand. Het leek wel een of ander spel, uit de tijd dat ze nog van die groene monitoren hadden, Pong speelden met paddles en via een modem, waar je de telefoonhoorn op moest leggen, inbelden in een bulletin board. Toch bleek later dat het ding ook weer niet zo heel lang geleden gefunctioneerd had. Want natuurlijk ging ik op zoek naar sporen van een Geocache. En vond iets! Het hele tijdsbeeld klopt voor geen meter, maar dat doet er niet toe; ik vond wat ik niet zocht: de coordinaten van een cache! Treed in mijn voetsporen, en haal boven water wat zelfs Peter R. de Vries niet in deze gedumpte hardware zal kunnen ontdekken.
Sometimes, you just stumble upon something. And you have not the least clue what you can do with it. Likewise, some time ago I found this monitor in a heap of computer scrap. It seemed like some image had burned in. That used to happen those days when the screen displayed the same image for an extended period. Still, there was something strange about this situation. It seemed like some sort of game, from the time they used to have green displays, played Pong with paddles, and made a dial-up connection with a modem, on which you had to put your phone handset, into a bulletin board. Still, later it appeared that the thing hadn't been functioning too long ago. Since, naturally, I looked for traces of a Geocache. And I found something! The complete character of the age wasn't consistent at all, but that didn't matter; I found something I wasn't even looking for: the coordinates of a cache. Imitate in my trail, and reveal what even Peter R. de Vries won't find in this ditched piece of hardware.
