Geocache Description:

The location for this geocache is an old railroad bridge across the Grand River that has been converted for use by the Kent Trail system. The best access by vehicle is Indian Mounds Drive; please note that this road is a one way scenic drive/bike path that begins at Wilson Ave and travels east, ending at Market Ave near Exit 73 of I-196. Do not drive west on this road. Originally, the middle section of this bridge was designed to swing out parallel to the shores, allowing ships to pass on either side as they traveled the river. The exact year the bridge was built varies according to the source, but a carving on one of the stone piers of the bridge indicates construction began in 1894. By 1907, commercial boats stopped trying to navigate the shallow waters of the Grand and the bridge became stationary. The bridge continued to carry trains across the river until 1975.

Ground zero for the container should give you an interesting look at the inner workings of this type of bridge. Please note the terrain rating and use due caution. The structure is very slippery when wet, and the area may be inaccessible if the river is running high.

Congratulations ourfamluvscaching on being First to Find! Credit to historicbridges.org for info on the bridge; click here for more details.
