Geocache Description:

Hawk and Hawkette mini invasion, 21/150 th of that other one. You should have fun and rate your geo-senses thoroughly tested if you find all of them.

The Ohio Blue Tip Strike Anywhere Match was a wonderful invention!

They could be lighted by dragging the head across your jeans, against any rough surface, flicked by your thumb nail, even on your front teeth if you did not mind the taste of sulfur and blackened teeth.

On the Florida farm where I grew up in the 50’s these matches had a number of practical uses, a box was kept in a metal match box holder next to the wood stove in the kitchen. Come morning some fat wood and a blue tip and you were on your way to two things, a warm kitchen and a hot stove on which to cook breakfast.

Other boxes were strategically placed around the house close to the oil lamps still in use at that time and in later years for power outages and of course hurricane season.

A rite of passage was being allowed to “strike the match” and light the stove or the lamps.

This “rite of passage” to a curious minded young lad was the proverbial Pandora’s Box of pyromania! How many ways can one find to strike a blue tip match? I tried every surface I could think of from the soles of my shoes to the dog’s back that was just passing by and became part of an unwitting experiment!

Some of the greatest fun I had was the discovery I could shoot the matches by dropping them down the barrel of my BB gun, away they flew, not far or with accuracy but bursting into flame when they hit, a mini explosion! Mini explosion, lets work on that, how can I make a lager explosion? Well one way is to break the heads off of a dozen or so matches place them on the anvil and hit them all at once with a hammer, things are looking up!

Do not deny that some of you reading this have tried all of the above and more, I know you all too well.

These marvelous fire starters were once manufactured in Wadsworth, Ohio, even have a summer festival named for them The Blue Tip Festival. Alas no more!
The old “Blue Tip” is gone, merged with and became Diamond Blue Tip and now manufactured in Kenner La. By Universal Match Corp.
