Geocache Description:

This one is for adventurious stash-hunters. The stash is located within the National Park “De Biesbosch”, so you will need a canoe or rowing boat to come near to it. Also the swampy area and the stinging nettles will be against you (especially in the summer).

The stash is located in a willow-tree wood, specific to this area. In part of a cut-off tree (too bad, not by the beavers), the stash is put away in a hollow part of this stump. If it’s not fully grown over by the stinging nettles, the lid of the stash is easy to view from a short distance away. Since “de Biesbosch” has high and low water levels, a pair of boots can be helpful to prevent wet feet. The stash is located at the end of creek called “Turfzakken” which is only accessible to non-motor-powered boats. The nicest way is to paddle/row as far as possible. The last part of the creek is officially closed to all boats, but you can paddle on … !!? The polder and dike are likely to be private property, but from the end of the navigable part of creek to the stash-place is only 1 km and the farmer doesn’t show himself that much. This cache was put away during an overnight-weekend canoeing trip with some die-hards of the HKC kayak club, just “enjoying” themselves with snow, rain, cold and the loneliness of the area during winter-time. The coordinates were calculated with the help of a Garmin eMap, using “averaging” over 100 samples. Accuracy during sampling was around 6 meters. Someone from our group has managed to find the stash the next morning, without having used a GPS ever before. For those who don’t own a canoe, you can hire one at the harbour of “Visserhank” or “Drimmelen” (Watch out if you start in Drimmelen, there is a rather dangerous crossing to make of a riverpart called “De Amer”). The container is a black bucket with orange sticker on it shouting : GEOCACHE Biesbosch Beaver Stash. The contents are a logbook and pencil, a welcome note, a few deck of cards, two mugs, two cd’s, a simple flashlight, a want-to-be swiss army knive, some handy measuring tools. Not too expensive but just some nice gadgets.
