Easy park and find. Level terrain. There is no need to cross the fence, please respect the private property beyond it. This is a hybrid cache with a stamp inside, please bring your own stamp pad. The cache also has items for trade.
This cache sits on an old railway bed that was part of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (MKT). It was incorporated May 23, 1870. In its earliest days the MKT was commonly referred to as "the K-T" which was its stock exchange symbol; this designation evolved into the "the Katy".
In Missouri a large portion of the MKT has been converted into the Katy Trail State Park which is over 250 miles long.
In this area the railway bed is commonly used by local farmers as a raised platform for hay storage or it has been dozed to make way for farmland, only bits and pieces remain. When I was younger this very K-T railway bed led to an elusive paw paw patch across the road to the north. If you could follow the tracks from here to the southeast for about 1/2 mile you would come to the junction of the MKT and Missouri Pacific Railroad at a little place that was called Cokedale. These railways were important to the coal mining industry that flourished here many years ago.
This is a hybrid letterbox cache, inside you will find a stamp that stays with the box. Traditionally letterboxers have a stamp of their own which they use to stamp the log in the box and in turn they stamp a personal journal with the stamp in the box. Please bring your own stamp pad.
We have placed a book in the cache, that is available for trade, with more information about letterboxing and geocaching. Please pass the book along once you are finished. Maybe we will get more hybrid boxes going? There is also a letterboxing geocoin with the book that is a separate trackable.
We hope you enjoy our cache, we really enjoyed researching the MKT (Katy) Railroad.
