From 1967 until the mid-1980's, this building served as the headquarters of the American Nazi Party. Formed in 1959 by George Lincoln Rockwell, the party emphasized racial separation. They featured public marches in Washington DC and New York, counter marching Martin Luther King and others. Espousing racist views, Rockwell, as the party leader, often generated angry responses from bystanders thus generating the attention he seemed to relish.
A Nazi insider assassinated Rockwell in 1967 and the successor, Matt Keohl, moved the headquarters to this location from the Ballston area
A former dentist's office, the HQ office was staffed by men wearing the brown shirt uniform and carrying a German automatic pistol. Racks of leaflets and books for sale were in the reception area.
Without the force of Rockwell, the party split into factions and the part that remained in this location moved to Chicago.
Now a coffee shop, a recent Gene Weingarten article in the Post said they still get the occasional letter addressed to the Nazi party. But the hatred is gone. This building is now a cool little dog-friendly coffee shop with a bohemian flair. Enjoy the hunt.
