THE CACHE IS NOT HIDDEN IN A WALL!! We were driving around Ullswater with another cache placement in mind and decided on a diversion to revisit the church after many years. In fact the last time we walked in the immediate area was during the foot-and-mouth outbreak in 2001 when ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ was deafening and tourists few. There has been a church in the area since 1218, at that time probably on the site where the Old Church Hotel now stands, the great yew tree there being a relic of those days. By 1474 the church and burial ground had moved to where Gowbarrow Hall now stands, and shortly after this building was destroyed by the Scots the “New Kirk” was built on the site of the present church – consecrated in 1558. That church was demolished after 300 years in 1881 and the present building was built of local stone and by local craftsmen in the same year. All Saints Church has a fine situation, with views of the fells surrounding Ullswater without the effort of walking or climbing – Enjoy! *******Congratulations to badger4272 for the FTF*******
