SQ - Kelly Cemetery Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

HercJerkandCo: This terrain is getting a bit rough for me to handle by myself so I'm going to archive this one. If any one is interested, this is a neat place because of the historic but hidden cemetery. I do have some ideas to make it easier to access which will require gaining different permission. Drop me an email if you're interested.

Geocache Description:

For the adventurous who like a challenge. An intense but fairly short bushwhack and climb into an abandoned cemetery where John Kelly, son of William Kelly, the builder of the Marblehead Lighthouse and others rest in solitude,

This old cemetery lies in the middle of an older, less active part of the LaFarge limestone quarry. The soil and stone was stripped away around the cemetery leaving it sitting on an uneven mesa surrounded by loose shale/limestone cliffs. The cemetery was given to Danbury Township along with a narrow easement to provide a semblance of access. This easement seems to be piles of mining spoil overgrown with brush and small trees - rough going in mid-November as I place this cache and probably much worse in summer. This easement is a 100 foot wide treeline that lies immediately south of East Harbor Builders on the west side of Hartshorn Road. There is room to park at the side of the road. This is currently the only legal way I've found to approach the cemetery as the surrounding property is private and posted with no-trespassing signs. At the back of the easement you will encounter a moderate cliff that needs to be scaled to reach the mesa. There are a couple of approaches that aren't too steep and descending seemed easiest sitting down. Dress appropriately. This cache is probably not a good idea when there's much snow or ice on the ground.

The cache is a camo'd peanut jar hidden away from but within sight of the stone markers.

The "SQ" in the cache name above signifies Spirit Quest, a project by the Northwest Ohio Geocachers to distinguish those caches that are set in cemeteries or memorial gardens. This cache is part of that series created by NWOGEO members to highlight cemeteries or memorial gardens in the area. Please be respectful of the area, and observe their rules and posted hours which are typically sunrise to sunset.
