Geocache Description:

…and get all your friends to help, too...including that little dutch boy!

Martis Creek Lake is down this road. The dam has the dubious distinction of getting the Army Corps of Engineers top rating of, “extremely high risk”. Only six others in the nation are in this coveted group. That explains why the water level is always kept so low. There have been several test fillings in the past, with the last in 1995. They aborted that attempt at five feet below the spillway, when “significant leakage” and “observed boils” were noted below the dam. This dam was built in 1972 with, “relatively few foundation explorations” and “no in-situ density tests”. The dam’s foundation is on porous alluvium and the leaks come from underneath. Originally designed for flood control, the outlet can only release 600 cfs, and the concern is, “seepage and piping failure of the dam during large inflow events due to the pool rising beyond the Corps’ ability to control”. Couple this with an undersized spillway………and so on….and so on….. On the flip side, for you worriers…with the extremely wide earthen design and low water levels, this dam is at the bottom of the list for other types of human shenanigans.

Well….enough fear mongering. This is wonderful recreation area. Good fishing, hiking, neat cache at Martis Cave, nice campground, and access to the sailplane side of the airport, where you can get glider rides. In winter the gate is closed here, and this road (and beyond) gets well utilized for biking, roller blading, dog walking, and when snow covers the road, cross country skiing and snow shoeing.

(Congrats to Applejohn, for FTF in Scheib-land)
