Camo'd nautical key holder in a tree. Please note that you do NOT have to cross the little ditch...the container should be in r-e-a-c-h from the property of the plaque.
While driving on the island I noticed this historical plaque placed on a well maintained site of some U.E.L. ancestry.
The notation on the plaque is worth a visit and the placement is that of a tribute by family members that I thought would interest people.
The following information is cited from the pamplet entitled AMHERST ISLAND: JEWEL OF THE LAKE and to which I was encouraged by the owner of the "Locust Lodge" to use for this page.
"The site is known as the WEMP Burial Cairn of Barnabas and Katherine Wemple, shortened to WEMP. UELS from New York State bought 100 acres on which the Cairn is located. A local legend is that two infant children from a subsequent owner were also buried there. There are apparently spectacular sink holes beyond the CAIRN but please do not visit as they are outside the property permissions.
The house across the street(green in colour) was called LOCUST LODGE and was bought for Mary Bowes in 1824 by Barnabas Wemp. A log home was first built there and the current farm house was built in 1830's. The barn that is in view from the CAIRN side was part of the original property."
The current owner of the LOCUST LODGE is aware of the geocache and was instrumental in providing me with this updated history. I thank her not only for the lessons but for her Amherst hospitality.
You will find this another easy grab and go and please be gentle with the limbs of the tree, particularly in the winter or cold.
Please bring your own pen or pencil for your signatures.
Hope you enjoy the history of this location and another little number for your milestone building.
