First of two caches along a walking trail, next to a nice little lake with a lot of history.
The inspiration for this cache came from a container I won at an event, and the Appalachian Trail Geocoin I picked up there. I would have loved to put both on the Appalachian/Long Trail that’s not far from here, but that is a geo-caching no-no. So here is the nice, new walking trail I found to place it on. It’s stocked with hiking related items: First Aid Kit, LED Flashlight, carabiners, batteries, & a couple of kid toys.
The trails are new, but the lake is where I took swimming lessons as a kid, and so did my own kids when they were little. This was quite the resort in the 1920’s, as you will see by the old camps along the shore.
Some info on the trails: (See www.wilmingtonvermont.us for more info)
There is a short loop, 0.3 miles, through the woods above the parking area that includes a branch to a longer trail of 2.7 miles in length. The trail above the parking area is for hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing only. The remaining trail can be used by mountain bikes or horseback. Beach access is for town residents and their guests only; however, there is a boat launch at the end of the lake for the public.
The trail is primarily wooded except for Lake Raponda Road which follows the shoreline. The short loop is over uneven ground on a gentle slope and crosses several short bridges. The longer loop is over primarily town-maintained gravel roads and a short section of trail that is not maintained.
