Stromboli - Close To Hell
Stromboli is one of seven islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea that together form the Aeolian volcanic arc north of Sicily. The island is located about 40 km northeast of Lipari, the main island of the archipelago, and is approximately 60 km away from both the Italian mainland and Sicily.
The total area of Stromboli island is 12.6 km⊃2;, and the highest elevation is between 924 m and 926 m above sea level. However, this represents only about one third of the entire volcano, as the height of the volcano from the seabed to the summit reaches approximately 3000 m.
There are two villages on the island. Around 450 people live permanently in Stromboli and about 30 in Ginostra. Cars are rarely seen on the island. While Ginostra only has narrow footpaths, Stromboli permits only electric mini-transporters and motorised three-wheel vehicles for supplying the population, as well as scooters belonging to residents.

Stromboli in the morning |
Today, most of the volcanoes in the archipelago are extinct. An exception is Stromboli, which remains highly active and is one of the best-known continuously active volcanoes in Europe. Already in ancient times, its clearly visible nocturnal eruptions served sailors as a natural lighthouse.
However, the history of Stromboli goes back much further. The volcano, which has been protected as a nature reserve since 1997, was formed around 200,000 years ago. At that time, the present-day island was still below sea level. The volcano Strombolicchio was particularly active during this period. Its remains are located only a few hundred metres away and now carry a lighthouse.
Around 160,000 years ago, Stromboli emerged from the sea and Strombolicchio became extinct. The caldera that formed around 40,000 years ago was modified and reshaped over thousands of years by further volcanic processes. This resulted in the almost circular stratovolcano that we know today.
At irregular intervals, larger and smaller eruptions occur from several crater openings. The characteristic ejection of lava fragments, scoria and ash is so typical of Stromboli that the term “Strombolian activity” was coined for this type of volcanism.
This globally unique, continuous activity is based on the so-called two-phase convection. At a certain depth within the volcanic conduit, the vapour pressure of the gases becomes greater than the pressure of the magma above. The rising gas bubbles ascend and carry fragments of magma with them when they burst at the surface. This degassing process increases the density of the affected melt, causing it to sink again and maintain the continuous cycle.

At the coordinates |
The active craters of the volcano are located on the northwestern flank of the summit. Therefore, material that does not fall back into the crater slides down the famous Sciara del Fuoco (“Fire Slide”) into the sea. For this reason, the village of Stromboli has never been destroyed by an eruption, despite having been inhabited for around 7000 years.
A stratovolcano typically shows a sequence of different eruptive stages: first, explosions occur with the ejection of ash, rock fragments and gases, followed by the outflow of lava. The structure of such volcanoes therefore consists of alternating layers of ash and lava.
If you are planning a visit to Stromboli, please make sure to observe the local regulations regarding access to the volcano!

Optional, but appreciated: a meaningful photo
Please additionally upload a photo of yourself or, for example, your GPS device at the large boulder at the given coordinates. You are also welcome to upload a photo from the location closest to the boulder.
If you send me the answers by email in the following format, you will receive a confirmation promptly:
GC218F0 in the subject line and your nickname together with the answers in the email body in the form “ABCDEFGH” (checksum = 17) or alternatively “KLMNOPQR” (checksum = 30) to the email address “earthcache[-at-]geochief.de”.
You may also send the answers via the Messaging Center. However, I check messages there rather rarely.
Once you have sent the answers, you may log the Earthcache directly. If there is a problem with your solution, I will contact you.
I cannot, of course, verify whether you were actually on site, but personally I would not log such a cache without having visited the required coordinates.
Please note that Found logs which, for example, are based only on a view of the location from a cruise ship at sea do not meet the intended requirements.
Information about Stromboli and the hike:

Stromboli - Close To Hell
A Stromboli vivono stabilmente circa 450 persone, mentre a Ginostra circa 30 abitanti.
Situazione attuale (aggiornata a 08/2026):

Stromboli - Close To Hell
