This is part of a series that I intend to hide to commemorate the railroads that helped the Hudson Valley grow and prosper. Each one will focus on an individual company or events that are an important part of our local history. This will be a series of letterbox hybrids that will all have a handmade stamp to match the cache. Stamp your own log book and return the stamp and ink pad so that others may use it.
This cache commemorates the New York Ontario & Western Railroad that rumbled along this rail bed long ago. The NY O&W formed in 1880 from the reorganization of the New York & Oswego Midland Railroad. By 1884, they had trackage rights from Oswego, NY on Lake Ontario to Weehawken, New Jersey. In it’s hey day, the steam locomotives brought a bustling tourist trade to Orange County and freight to most of the state. The O&W finally defaulted on its loans in 1937 after a long battle to survive after losing most of its coal freight contracts.
The cache itself is a .30cal ammo can hidden along the abandoned rail line. This trail is best accessed from Jackson Rd. There is a pull off right next to the abandoned Conrail rail bed. Following it east, you will intersect the O&W line at a small tressle. The land alongside the rail beds is private property, so please stick to them and respect the local landowners privacy. The cache is within 15 feet of the trail. Hiking boots are definitely recommended as the trail is susceptible to puddling after rains, but it is easily circumnavigated. After stamping your book, feel free to take one of the handmade tokens that will be in each of the caches for this series and will be specific to that cache. I’ll try to keep them stocked, so please take only one.
